Documents You Need to Bring with You In
Order to Complete the FAFSA Online
You will need information
from the following documents to complete the FAFSA and other financial aid
application forms.
Deadlines
To meet the
deadlines for most states you should submit the form no later than March 1,
with February 15 being ideal.
The 2005-2006 School Year (July 1st, 2005 - June 30th, 2006):
PIN Information
Beginning December 26, 2004, all new and current ED PIN
holders are required to "activate" their ED PIN for added security against
identity theft. The ED PIN must be activated prior to use even if you
have used your PIN in the past. ED PIN activation is only required once. To
apply for and/or activate your ED PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov and select the “Apply
for a PIN” or "Activate My PIN" link. Follow the easy
step-by-step process to activate your ED PIN.
The
PIN serves as your electronic signature and provides access to your personal
information in various U.S. Department of Education systems. Anyone--including
parents of dependent students--who has a valid Social Security Number and is a
U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen may apply for a PIN. You can use your PIN
to sign your financial aid documents, so keep it in a safe place and do not
give or entrust it to anyone, even if that person or organization is
helping you fill out your FAFSA.
The form cannot be processed until we they receive your
signature(s). Using a PIN to sign your application electronically is by far the
fastest and most reliable way to sign your application. Once you successfully
complete a request, they will e-mail or mail you a PIN, depending on whether
you provided them with an e-mail address. It will take approximately 1-3
business days after you request your PIN for you to receive an e-mail
notification with instructions on how to retrieve it electronically, or 7-10
days to receive it in the mail via the U.S. Postal Service.
