Superintendent of Schools
Mr. Robert J. Breidenstein
Dear Salamanca Community,It is hard to believe that we are rapidly closing in on the end of the first quarter of instruction and learning for this school year. To quote Ferris Beuler, "Things move pretty fast". Just this week we experienced a rarity in weather, from a devastating hurricane. I personally would prefer snow any day over wind, flooding and storm surges. While we escaped the brunt of the storm, others in nearby Pennsylvania and across New York State did not fare as well.
The process to close schools is never an easy decision nor is it an exact science. Far from it, the final decision to close rests with fundamental concern for safety.
How is the decision to close school made?
- Generally road conditions are a major factor in the decision to close school. We consult with City, State and County officials. Because of the size of our district, and the location of many of our homes in the district, travel safety is a priority.
- The weather patterns, such as wind chill (generally below -20 Fahrenheit), high wind warnings (greater than 50 mph sustained), precipitation and ice are also determining factors.
- Lack of power and electricity on our three campuses and in our community
- Lack of heat in our buildings
Who makes the decision to close?
The decision to close is made solely by the Superintendent in consultation with transportation, building and grounds City, State and county officials.
How is the community and staff notified?
School closing information can be found in multiple locations including: WGRZ, WIVB, WKBW, WBEN Radio 930, WNED, WGWE WPIG, on the District website (www.salamancany.org), the school Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SalamancaWarriors), and through our automated Global Connect all call system.
How can parents prepare for weather events?
- Please make arrangements for childcare before the weather event
- Make sure school has current and correct contact information
- Dress your child and children accordingly for the weather conditions
When is the decision to close made?
- The decision to close is made by 5:30 a.m. or earlier if at all possible and feasible. This allows us time to notify staff and news media outlets of the decision.
- The decision to cancel afterschool activities is made by 1:00 p.m.
Can the decision be reversed?
Generally, we will not reverse our decision to close in the morning once the decision is made. Once we make the decision to open the schools, many parents rely on our decision and leave for work. If we then sent students right back home, many children would return to an empty house or unsupervised bus stop. School is a safe place for every child in any bad weather event.
As always, we will set a place for you at the table, come join us!
Sincerely,
Mr. Robert J. Breidenstein
Superintendent
