3rd, 4th and 5th grades: I previewed approximately 50 new library books to all grade-levels. I book-talked many of the new titles, choosing grade-level appropriate books to each of the different grade levels. There are a wide variety of new books, both non-fiction and fiction, including books by and about Native Americans, all kinds of science-related books, many genres of fiction chapter books and picture books, folktales, and lots of new biographies. The kids are very excited about these books and they are already being checked out by many students.

Days 4, 5, and 6:

3rd: We are continuing to read books by Tomie dePaola. This week we are reading Big Anthony and the Magic Ring. Students are also checking out books, and taking AR tests if they choose.

4th: We are continuing w/the unit on pourquoi tales (“how and why” stories). This week we are reading How Chipmunk got his stripes : a tale of bragging and teasing, as told by Joseph Bruchac & James Bruchac. Students are also checking out books, and taking AR tests if they chose.

5th: We are reading Crazy Horse’s Vision, by Joseph Bruchac. I am providing background information on the period and the region in which the story takes place, including the Battle of Little Bighorn. I am also showing students photographs of the Crazy Horse monument presently being constructed in South Dakota. Students are also checking out books, and taking AR tests if they choose.
