Mrs. Holly’s OT students have been working extra hard on their manuscript and cursive handwriting. They have been practicing writing words and sentences giving special attention to the bridge connectors that connect the letters to form words. All the students have improved their skills this year and are making Mrs. Holly very proud!  (Click Here to what Mrs. Holly has to say about OT)

Mrs. Monroe’s classroom we have started the unit on The Food Chain.  Watch for our posters in the hall.  For writing we are writing friendly  letters.  During Math we have two groups.  One is working on place value and the other is learning the multiplication facts.  During some of our reading time Mrs. Caya and Mrs. Monroe have begun Orton-Gillingham lesson with some of the students.  Also we all are ready for some warmer and sunnier weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Bocharski’s students have continued to focus on the theme of heritage.   Groups are reading the book “Letters from Rifka” which tells the account of a young Jewish girl and her family who flee from Russia in 1919.  They travel through Poland and Belgium along their journey with the goal to reach America.  They meet with many obstacles along the way but never lose hope of reaching thieir new home in America and freedom from persecution.  Students are very interested in this story since the main character is a girl about their age and they are eager to see what happens next.

Mrs. Caya--This week our class reviewed the order of operations in math. Some of us started working with a new program to improve our spelling, while we all started a project working with the food chain.

FIFTH GRADE:  We are comparing and contrasting two stories.  The stories are called, “Jamal Hits the Ball” by Darrin Donaldson and “On the Right Track” by Mike Neigoff.  We started this by using a Venn Diagram pocket chart.  Now, we’re putting our ideas on construction paper projects that will hang in the hall.

FOURTH GRADE:  We are playing many reading games that Mrs. A made to go along with the Cynthia Rylant books.

Occupational Therapy is a medically based profession that helps children reach their true potentials within the school environment.

Occupational therapists work as part of the educational team to help children with physical limitations, attention and behavior difficulties, learning disablities, visual impairments, psychological problems, or developmental delays, to achieve their maximal level of functioning.

O.T.'s work on helping students improve in the following areas:

1. Hand skill development or fine motor skills
2. Gross motor skills and Sensory Integration Skills.
3.  Visual Perceptual Skills
4.  Visual Motor Skills
5. Life Skills such as dressing, grooming and feeding as well as skills dealing with time, money and organizing ones self.
6.  Range of motion, muscle strengthening, and positioning.
7.  Handwriting skills

O.T.s use purposeful activities to help students achieve their goals and objectives.  Example of activities are:  arts and crafts, games both gross and fine morot, various play activities, printing and cursive instruction, Yoga, and other methods as well.

Students qualify for OT based on standardized test given by the therapist.  Deficit areas are identified and the child receives direct or indirect OT services based on their needs.  If the child qualifies for direct services, he or she is usually seen twice per week for 1/2 hour sessions.  Care is taken to not remove the child from any academic instruction.

Please feel free to contact Holly Studd at Seneca School if you have any questions regarding Occupational Therapy in our school @ 945-5140.
