| Occupational
Therapy is a medically based profession that helps children reach
their true potentials within the school environment.
Occupational therapists work as part of the
educational team to help children with physical limitations,
attention and behavior difficulties, learning disablities, visual
impairments, psychological problems, or developmental delays, to
achieve their maximal level of functioning.
O.T.'s work on helping students improve in
the following areas:
1. Hand skill development or fine motor
skills
2. Gross motor skills and Sensory Integration Skills.
3. Visual Perceptual Skills
4. Visual Motor Skills
5. Life Skills such as dressing, grooming and feeding as well as
skills dealing with time, money and organizing ones self.
6. Range of motion, muscle strengthening, and positioning.
7. Handwriting skills
O.T.s use purposeful activities to help
students achieve their goals and objectives. Example of
activities are: arts and crafts, games both gross and fine
morot, various play activities, printing and cursive instruction,
Yoga, and other methods as well.
Students qualify for OT based on
standardized test given by the therapist. Deficit areas are
identified and the child receives direct or indirect OT services
based on their needs. If the child qualifies for direct
services, he or she is usually seen twice per week for 1/2 hour
sessions. Care is taken to not remove the child from any
academic instruction.
