Here's What's Happening in Third Grade!

Ms. Smith’s third grade class read the story “The Go Around Dollar” this week.

They have also been learning how to multiply using lattice as well as how to divide basic facts.

Mrs. Skoken-My class continues w/ previous units: A study of energy using popcorn, a study of money in rdng., a study of Russia w/in our Asia unit, and we are beginning to do division w/ remainders as part of our post – March math sequence.

Mrs. Sande’s class reviewed how to write money using $ and decimal points.  Students played Factor Frenzy, the Talking Multiplication Game, which develops mental math and listening skills. We are continuing to learn and practice multiplication concepts.  In science we began a unit on butterflies and the children were very interested in how you can tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth.  We are continuing our Read Across America project. Currently we are in California and heading back to New York. When we return we will celebrate with a pizza party.  Each page read represents one more mile.  In reading class we reviewed vocabulary words with a new activity called Eggspert. For the Concept Question board we wrote about different ways people spend money.  We investigated a Web Hunt about money to coordinate with our current reading theme, money.

Miss Carlson’s class read The Go Around Dollar for our unit on money during Reading First Time.   We completed our stories on If I Had a Million Dollars for language arts.  We started a unit of Australia for Social Studies.  In math we continued working on our multiplication facts and division.

We are Proud to be a Reading First School!

Reading First

G’day Mates,

Two guests from Australia visited Mrs. Sande’s third grade class and answered student questions about this fascinating land down under. Kylie and her friend Catherine are visiting the United States. Kylie and Mrs. Jeannie Jasperson, a student’s parent, have been pen pals for a long time. They finally met each other for the first time. The classroom visit was arranged during this year’s parent teacher conferences.

The third graders prepared for the visit by drawing and labeling maps of Australia. They learned Australian expressions such as “G’day” and “barbie.” The class also read about Australian myths such as “How the Kangaroo Got Its Tail” and “The Myth of Tiddalik, the Flood-Maker.”

Students read many books from the library and brainstormed questions to ask Kylie and Catherine. They learned about Tasmania, the rain forest, Lake Eyre, Australian sports, and many customs of Australia. Students were particularly interested in the holiday called Australia Day and that koalas sleep around 20 hours each day. Also, they were curious about how much homework students have each day.

The students made an Australian treat called Hundreds and Thousands Sandwiches, which are slices of bread covered with butter and lots of sprinkles. When Kylie saw the treats she said, “Ooh, are you making fairy bread?” This Australian treat scored a thumbs up with the class.

The students will continue learning about Australia and will make booklets to take home and share with their parents.
