#MLA Formats


Be sure to adhere to the following formats when setting up your MLA  style-paper.  The directions provided on this page were created for Microsoft Word in Windows 7 (the current version of Word and Windows on the school's computers).

Important Note:  If you do not have Windows 7 at home, make sure that you save your paper in the .doc format.  Go to "Save As" and choose .doc as the file type.

Line Spacing

The entire paper, including the Works Cited Page, should be double spaced!

  1.  Under the Home tab, look in the “Paragraph” section of shortcuts.
  2.  Click the line spacing button and locate double space.
  3.  Select “Double Space”

Margins
All margins should be ONE INCH. 
  1. Click the Page Layout tab at the top of the page.
  2. Click the “Margins”  button.
  3. Choose “Normal”

Font
Font should be 12 point and legible.  Select one of the following:
•    Times New Roman
•    Calibri
•    Arial
•    Garamond
•    Courier New
•    Comic Sans

Heading
Use the following heading for the paper.  A title page is not necessary unless required by your instructor. 





           Author's Full Name

            Teacher(s) Name(s)

            Course Name

            Date Due

                         Start text here.

Header/Footer
  1.  Click the “Insert” at the top of the page.
  2. Click “Header”
  3. Choose the first option—“Blank Header.”  You will be magically transported into the Heater/Footer Design Tab.  (You can get back here at any time by clicking on the header at the top of the page.)
  4. Click “Page Number,” then “Top of Page” and choose the third option (the page number at the right of the page).
  5. The page number of your current page will appear
  6. Without moving the cursor, type your last name, then hit the space bar once.
  7. Click “Different First Page” (This will keep the page number off your title page)
  8. Highlight the entire text (Your last name and the page number) and change the font to match what you are using in the text of your paper.
  9. Click anywhere outside of the header/footer area.
