Prospect Elementary School is a Reading First School
by Barbara Shurilla
The Salamanca City School District was awarded the Reading First
grant on June 20, 2006. This federally funded grant provides money for quality
reading instruction for kindergarten through grade 3. The purpose of this grant
is to ensure that children learn to read by the end of third grade by using a
scientifically research based reading program. It also provides professional
staff development through the New York State Reading Academy. In
this training teachers further develop teaching skills and strategies in the
five main areas of reading. These Big Five areas of reading are:
Phonemic Awareness, Phonics and Word Study, Fluency, Vocabulary, and
Comprehension.
