• Writing a Thesis Statement

There are several ways that you can write a thesis statement. It will be dictated by your research question and the information that you have found.  Start by taking your research question and turning it into a definitive statement, adding essential information that you have found in your research.

Look at the sample question about railroads from the keyword chart we created in Step 1:

How did the development of railroads help to industrialize the United States during the 1800s?

Possible thesis statement strategies could be:

    ·           Use a number word.

Example:  During the 1800s, the development of railroads helped to industrialize the United States in three ways.

    ·        List main points.

Example:  During the 1800s, the development of railroads helped to industrialize the United States by allowing materials andgoods to be more easily transported, allowing people to travel between industrial centers more quickly, and decreasing the cost of products.

    ·        Make a claim.

Example:  The development of railroads during the 1800s was the single most important event that led to the industrialization of United States.
