The first Business/Marketing Student of the Month for the 2020-2021 school year is Cole Johnson. Cole was selected by his business teachers because of his leadership in his classes, his tenacity, perseverance, and academic excellence.
Cole has taken or is taking the following business/marketing courses: GS 111 College Success Skills, Robots Drones & Rovers, Keyboarding, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A- Programming II, and Robotics I, II and Math and Programming for Robotics/Intern. Additionally, Cole has taken many advanced programming and computer-based courses from St. Bonaventure University and JCC and received a 4.0 in all of them.
Cole’s excellence in academics has earned him a spot on the following honor societies: National Honor Society, Business/Marketing Honor Society, the Math Honor Society, and the Science Honor Society. He is in the top 5 of the class of 2021.
Cole has received many accolades including: Jamestown Community College Connections Student of the Year, Shelby Hancox Memorial Award for Independent Technical Achievement at St. Bonaventure, Director’s Choice Award for Western NY Invention Convention, the Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology, Highest Rookie Seed Award in 2018, 2018 Innovative Engineering Finalist, Nanoline competition where the team won the best engineered award, Salamanca STEAM Fair Award winner for two years, 2018 Salamanca Science Student of the Year, 2019 Salamanca Math Student of the Year, and the Excellence in extracurricular activities award.
Cole has exceptional leadership skills. He presented and spoke on a student-led panel at the Rochester World Maker Faire. When the pandemic began, he 3D printed masks and shields for essential workers.
He is the lead programmer and electrician for the school robotics team. Cole is the founding member of the schools’ Dungeons & Dragons Club, and after school he has taught robotics to our intermediate school students.
He has designed electronics and software for a laser scarecrow project for the Erie County Cooperative Extension. Cole has performed trouble shooting on a faulty product from the company Thimble, and he has put in countless hours on personal electronics and programming projects for community members.
Cole also enjoys being a member of the RC Club, and the Physics Club with Dr. Robert Williams from the University of Buffalo. He is also a student government representative.
Cole has a vast and impressive range of technical skills. The programming languages that he knows are: Java, Arduino, 6502 assembly, JavaScript, C#, C++, and Python.
Cole is proficient in creating high frequency digital breadboard electronics, Windows OS and Windows command line. He is also proficient with Linux OS and Linux command line.
He is adept at the following consumer electronics boards: Arduino, esp8266, Raspberry Pi, PSOC 5ip programmable system on chip. Cole is skilled in reading datasheets, technical documentation, drawing schematics and circuit diagrams. He is proficient with both digital and analog oscilloscopes, and has knowledge of large-scale computer network structures and network management.
In addition, Cole has earned a spot as a Salamanca STEAM intern where he is amazing in teaching, designing and troubleshooting high-end technologies that the district offers students. Some of these technologies include teaching how to use industry standard CNC machines, 3D printers, teaching programming, designing and building robots for international competitions, leading other students in how to build and program so that they are competition ready, and much more.
