This past Friday was day four of Salamancaβs Project SAMI, College and Careers Camp.
In the morning students learned about careers in drafting and manufacturing. In the afternoon students bussed to Oleanβs MTI lab and fabricated yo-yoβs using the facilityβs machines. Students learned precision machining terminology such as tolerance, XYZ coordinates and G&M coding.
For example, the tool holding apparatus is designed to hold cutting bits or tools.β―On a mill, this is often the element that spins, but on a lathe, this is the feature that secures the workpiece to the table.
Depth of Cut is related to speed and feeds and is how much material is going to be removed with each pass of the tool. This is another adjustment that can be made to improve surface finish and/or the life of the tool.
Salamanca students worked with a variety of shop machines to fabricate their yo yoβs. These tools included the CNC mill, CNC lathe, manual lathe, drill press, orbital sander, steel rule, MIG welder and arbiter press.
Powerful learning opportunity today!
Thank you JCC Olean for your wonderful hospitality and engaging MTI lab activity! This experience will plant seeds of engineering excellence in our students for years to come!

Day three of Salamancaβs Project SAMI, College and Careers Camp.
Students visited Gakwi:yo:h Farms, home to the nationally acclaimed Bison Ranch and Haudenosaunee approach to agricultural practices.
Here our summer school students examined how the natural rotations of legumes, grains, and vegetables in different botanical families help cycle nutrients in the soil and have different rooting depths. Perennial berry shrubs hold the soil in place and allow organic matter and aggregates to build without disturbance.
According to the tour guide, the invasive Japanese Beetle is a constant threat to the blueberry, raspberry and other sweet crops. Additionally, cut worms and flea beetles cause issues for young crops. Pest and invasive species management in Gakwi:yo:h farming is achieved by using appropriate cropping techniques, biological control, and natural pesticides. For example, planted marigolds can be found throughout the farm. These beautiful flowers draw in carnivorous wasps which eat the beetles and cut worms.
Through a guided tour, students learned techniques for honey and syrup production. Gakwi:yo:h farming utilizes a Reverse Osmosis (RO) System for maple syrup production. In RO, a semi-permeable membrane is used to separate water from sugar, minerals, and other impurities. In the maple industry farmers use reverse osmosis systems, but instead of keeping the purified water, Gakwi:yo:h farms keep the concentrated sugar, minerals, and other impurities as concentrated maple sap to finish boiling into maple syrup.
The students also enjoyed a sit down Bison burger lunch with farm managers, student workers and farm hands. They were told that Bison fertilize grazing lands while mixing and aerating the soil with minimal compaction but they canβt be found on the second site we visited because Harry Vetch is used on the land to help keep soil together. However, its seeds are poisonous to the grazing animals so the farm managers maintain a land for their animal operations and another for crops.
Also exciting is that students and faculty at Salamanca High School had a chance to share what they are doing though the districtβs premier workforce certificate program, Project SAMI. Beginning this past fall, Salamanca students had the opportunity to enroll in Project SAMI, a comprehensive distance-learning STEM program where students may study one of eight high-impact, college majors, including agricultural drone inspections. By gathering historical and current conditions of farmland, such as temperature, crop health and soil moisture, our students are learning to map future yield capacity or risk of their farm. With the visual representations of GIS data in the form of imagery, field survey maps and tabular data, our students can help farms make decisions such as how to address nutrient deficiencies and fertilizer treatments, crop health, weed control, etc.
Powerful learning opportunity today!
Thank you Gakwi:yo:h Farms for your wonderful hospitality and engaging farming tour! This experience will plant seeds of agricultural excellence in our students for years to come!
Tomorrow SAMI students head to a fabrication lab to explore Manufacturing Technology.

Day two of Salamancaβs Project SAMI, College and Careers Camp. Today, students visited the Niagara Power Authority & Vista, New York State's biggest electricity producer.
Here they examined the nature of electricity through the eyes of pioneers like Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.
Through a virtual simulator, students designed their own dam, to operate a power grid during a storm. They enjoyed a high-tech virtual ride plummeting from the sky and into the Niagara River; shooting through the penstocks and swirling around a spinning turbine; then zipping at high speeds along high-tension power lines across the landscapes of New York.
Probably most exciting is that students evaluated the three major components of a macro-electrical power system: transmission, a high-power transmission grid and a distribution system.
The high-voltage transmission system links the generators to substations, which supply power to the users through a distribution system. Interruptions or inappropriate loads these aging connecting links can disrupt the flow of power from generators to the users, which our students worked vigorously to troubleshoot through the simulated power grid!

Day 1 of Harry Potter STEAM-Adventure Camp.
During this camp, students will read excerpts from the Harry Potter books, while they explore adventure, magic, and musical theory.

Today is the first day of Salamanca High Schoolβs Project SAMI, STEAM Camp.
In the morning, enrolled Project SAMI students worked on their college academy schoolwork in Drone Inspections, Engineering Technology or Sustainable Land Management.
Meanwhile, prospective SAMI students learned about regional career opportunities through our Discovery Career Modules, which are occupational lessons in Biomedical Technology, Sustainable Farming & Advanced Manufacturing.
During the afternoon, SAMI students visit local universities, utility plants and farm operations to learn about the careers they are studying through handβs on activities, facilitated by local experts of the field.
For example, on Tuesday our students traveled to Saint Bonaventure Universityβs BioMedical Training Center, where they examined an interactive 3D model of a βkadabraβ human, which is used to train the next generation of surgeons and physician assistants.
Afterwards, they worked with a local physician assistant instructor to take the pulse of a βliving and breathingβ programmable automaton, also used to train medical professionals on procedure and rhetoric.
One of our SAMI electrical engineering students asked to look under the hood of the automaton and enjoyed identifying the various electrical components used to generate features such a realistic pulse or breathing.

This week in Mrs. Middaughβs and Mrs. Mahanyβs Computer Learning and Social Skills class, students learned how to use Book Creator. The students had already created Christmas lists in Word, listing 12 things they wanted Santa to bring them. They added bulleted lists and pictures along with a background for this step of their project. This week, Mrs. Schnaufer came in and assisted in teaching the students to make books using the program Book Creator. For this part of their project, the students created a book cover and a page for each item on their list. Each page had text and a picture, a shape and a voice recording on it. The prompt was βOn the first day of Christmas, I would like Santa to bring to meβ¦β They did 12 pages in their book, one for each of the 12 days of Christmas. The students really are enjoying building this project and were truly excited when they we able to add their voices to the book!

Students in Mrs. Phillips-Moores created a Closed Planet System - sealed terrarium, class each received a Gatorade bottle that was cut in two. St Bonaventure student intern put a small amount of charcoal and gravel in the bottom of the bottles.
Then the students needed to find a small plant that would fit into their bottles. Once they found their plant, they added soil and water, along with their plant, into their bottle. Our student intern taped the bottled together to seal them up. They placed their closed systems in the classroom windows and will be making observation over about a 3-week period. We have already saw some growth with the roots of the plants.

Our UPK classes had a great time seeing the fire truck brought over by one of the Salamanca firefighters!!! π€
Thank you so much for coming for fire safety week and to the City Of Salamanca Fire Dept.
